Welcome to the Seedling Projects blog! We like sharing our thoughts, and what we're up to. Education, environment, health and much more, consumes our thoughts day in and day out. Take a look...
Please urge your Members of Congress to attend the screening of Pig Business, a film exploring the impacts that factory pig farms have on the environment, workers, human health, rural communities, and animal welfare.
By inviting your legislators they will understand how the factory farming system:
•abuses animals by keeping pregnant sows in narrow steel cages on bare concrete floors
•sickens neighboring residents with toxic fumes
•pollutes rivers and the coast with untreated waste causing massive fish kills
•endangers human health by overusing antibiotics
•destroys rural communities by driving local family farmers out of business
Heritage Foods USA was formed in 2001 as the sales and marketing arm for Slow Food USA, a non-profit organization founded by Patrick Martins and dedicated to celebrating regional cuisines and products. The Heritage Turkey Project, which helped double the population of heritage turkeys in the United States and upgraded the Bourbon Red turkey from “rare” to “watch” status on conservation lists, was Heritage Foods USA’s first foray into saving American food traditions. In 2004 it became an independent company. Heritage Foods USA exists to promote genetic diversity, small family farms, and a fully traceable food supply.
With just under two weeks remaining until the Capitol Hill premiere of Pig Business, Seedling Projects is putting out the call to you, the consumer to urge your Members of Congress to attend the screening and get informed on the harmful effects of factory pig farming and the benefits of its alternatives. Have your voice heard by signing our Change.org petition here.
But don’t stop there. Share the petition with anyone you know who believes a better food system is possible. And if you live in the D.C. area, attend the screening. Special guest Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (Waterkeeper Alliance) will introduce the film, followed by a Q & A and panel discussion moderated by Kennedy with Kathy Ozer (National Family Farm Coalition), Dr. Michael Greger (The Humane Society), and Andrew Kimbrell (Center for Food Safety). Additional information on the screening is available on the Pig Business website.
